Phi Phi Don vs Phi Phi Leh

Most people say "Phi Phi Islands" as if it's one place. It isn't. The name covers two very different islands sitting side by side in the Andaman Sea and understanding the difference between them makes your visit make a lot more sense.

Phi Phi Don vs Phi Phi Leh — What's the Difference?

Here's everything you need to know about Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh before you go.

Two Islands, One Name

The Phi Phi group is made up of six small islands, but two dominate: Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. They're about two kilometres apart, close enough to visit both on the same day which is exactly what our tours do.

They could not be more different in character.

Phi Phi Don — The Living Island

Phi Phi Don is the larger of the two, and the only inhabited island in the group. It's shaped like a dumbbell two forested hillsides connected by a narrow strip of land where the main village sits. That village is Ton Sai, the beating heart of Phi Phi: full of restaurants, dive shops, guesthouses, and the particular energy of a place that hosts thousands of visitors while still feeling rooted in something real.

For travellers on a day tour from Phuket, Phi Phi Don is where you'll snorkel the coral gardens, explore the bay, and feel the scale of the limestone cliffs up close. The waters around the island are warm and teeming sea turtles are a regular sighting, and the reef fish here are among the most varied in the region.

Monkey Beach, tucked into a rocky cove on the northern side of Phi Phi Don, is a favourite stop a small sandy beach where long-tailed macaques come down to the shoreline and the snorkeling just offshore is excellent.

Phi Phi Don is where the life is. It's active, it's layered, and it rewards curiosity.

Phi Phi Leh — The Iconic One

Phi Phi Leh is uninhabited, smaller, and almost entirely enclosed by towering limestone cliffs. There are no beaches you can walk to, no restaurants, no village just sheer rock walls, emerald water, and the extraordinary silence of a place that has been protected from development.

It is simply one of the most dramatic pieces of geography in Southeast Asia.

The island's centrepiece is Maya Bay a perfect curved cove enclosed on three sides by cliffs that rise 100 metres above the water. Maya Bay became globally famous when it appeared in the film The Beach in 2000, and the pressure of millions of annual visitors eventually forced its closure in 2018 for ecological recovery. It reopened in 2022 with daily visitor limits and timed entry measures that have allowed the reef and marine life to recover significantly.

Visiting Maya Bay today feels different from the overcrowded version of a decade ago. The coral is coming back. The water is clearer. And the strict entry limits mean the experience is more considered than it once was. Our team handles all coordination for Maya Bay access included on the Phi Phi & Khai Island tour. and Phi Phi & Bamboo Island tour.

Phi Phi Leh also has Pileh Lagoon a hidden, enclosed body of emerald water accessible only by boat, with vertical cliffs on all sides and water so still it reflects the rock above it perfectly. It's one of the most photographed spots in the Andaman, and one of the most genuinely otherworldly places we bring guests to.

Which One Is "Better"?

Neither, they complement each other, which is why we visit both on our Phi Phi day tours.

Phi Phi Leh gives you the iconic, cinematic scenery the stuff of screensavers and travel magazines. It's where you'll take the photograph that doesn't need a filter.

Phi Phi Don gives you the living version of the Andaman; coral gardens, local boats, the texture of a real island. It's where you snorkel until your fingers go wrinkly and feel genuinely in the water rather than just looking at it.

A day that includes both is a day that tells the full story of Phi Phi.

Do Both Tours Visit Both Islands?

Yes. Both our Phi Phi tours depart from Royal Phuket Marina by Speed Catamaran and include stops on or around both Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh.

The Phi Phi Island & Khai Island tour includes Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach, snorkeling at the coral gardens, and a relaxed afternoon on Khai Island. It's the most comprehensive way to experience both Phi Phi islands in a single day.

The Phi Phi Island & Bamboo Island tour combines Phi Phi with Bamboo Island; a quieter, more secluded stop that suits travellers who want more beach time and a slower afternoon pace.

Either way, you'll see both Don and Leh. The choice between the two tours comes down to what you want for the second half of your day.
