Phi Phi Islands Snorkeling Guide — Best Spots, What to See & What to Know

This guide covers the best snorkeling spots, what you'll find at each one, and everything you need to know before you get in the water.

Why Phi Phi Is One of Thailand's Best Snorkeling Destinations

The Andaman Sea runs warm year-round; water temperatures sit between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius through most of the year, which means no wetsuit, no hesitation, just mask on and go.

The reefs around Phi Phi benefit from the bay's geography. Sheltered on multiple sides by limestone, many of the best snorkeling sites sit in calm, protected water even on days when the open sea has a bit of swell. And the marine biodiversity is genuinely exceptional; Phi Phi sits within a broader Andaman ecosystem that supports over 200 species of reef fish, multiple species of sea turtle, blacktip reef sharks, and some of the most intact hard coral in the region.

Visibility on a good day in peak season reaches 15 to 20 metres clear enough to see the reef structure well below you while floating on the surface.

Best Snorkeling Spots at Phi Phi Islands

1. Coral Gardens — Phi Phi Don

The coral gardens on the southwest side of Phi Phi Don are the most visited snorkeling site in the Phi Phi group and they earn the reputation. The reef here is extensive, relatively shallow (2 to 6 metres), and home to a density of fish life that can feel almost overwhelming the first time you put your head underwater.

Look for: powder blue surgeonfish, parrotfish grinding away at coral, clownfish tucked in anemones. If you're patient and quiet at the edges of the reef, small blacktip reef sharks are a genuine possibility; they're shy, harmless, and one of the highlights of any Phi Phi snorkel.

This is the best site for first-time snorkelers. The water is calm, the depth is manageable, and there's enough to see at the surface that you don't need to dive down to appreciate it.

2. Monkey Beach — Phi Phi Don

Monkey Beach sits in a small, rocky cove on the northern shore of Phi Phi Don, named for the long-tailed macaques that come down to the waterline from the jungle above. The snorkeling just offshore is excellent and often overlooked by guests who focus on watching the monkeys from the boat.

The reef here is in good condition and the fish life is diverse. The cove is sheltered from most wind directions, which keeps the water clear and calm. It's one of our favourite stops; half beach visit, half underwater exploration.

3. Pileh Lagoon — Phi Phi Leh

Pileh Lagoon is one of the most visually dramatic snorkeling sites anywhere in the Andaman. The lagoon is an enclosed body of water on the eastern side of Phi Phi Leh, completely ringed by limestone cliffs that rise 40 to 50 metres straight up from the waterline.

The snorkeling is different here from the coral gardens; the lagoon is deeper, the water is still and very clear, and the fish life tends toward the larger, more curious species. The visual experience of floating in an enclosed space with cliff walls on all sides and water that changes colour with depth is unlike anything else on the tour.

4. Khai Island

Khai Island is not technically part of the Phi Phi group, but it's included on our Phi Phi Island & Khai Island tour and deserves a prominent place on any snorkeling guide.

The reef at Khai begins practically at the beach; you wade out, put your mask down, and you're immediately over coral. This makes it exceptional for younger children, less confident swimmers, and anyone who wants high-quality snorkeling without a long swim from the boat.

The fish life is abundant and surprisingly diverse for such a shallow, accessible reef. Parrotfish, angelfish, fusiliers moving in fast-moving schools, and the occasional sea turtle resting on the bottom Phi Phi consistently delivers.

5. Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island's reef sits on the eastern side of the island, accessible by a short swim from the beach or directly from the boat. The coral here tends to run deeper than Khai; 4 to 8 metres, with excellent hard coral formations and a noticeable current that brings in pelagic fish alongside the resident reef species.

It's included on our Phi Phi Island & Bamboo Island tour and is a favourite among guests who want something a little more adventurous than the shallower sites.

What You'll See Underwater

Phi Phi's reefs reward different things depending on what you're looking for.

Reef fishes are everywhere; surgeonfish (Dory from Finding Nemo), parrotfish, pufferfish, wrasse, butterflyfish, and hundreds of species of smaller damselfish and anthias that move in clouds over the coral. The Coral Gardens are your best bet for sheer volume.

Sea turtles are sighted regularly at the Coral Gardens and at Khai Island. They tend to be feeding on seagrass or resting on the reef bottom don't approach them, just float quietly and watch.

Blacktip reef sharks are present at the Coral Gardens and around Phi Phi Don more broadly and most times at Maya Bay. They're small (typically under a metre), skittish, and completely harmless to snorkelers. Seeing one is a genuine highlight!

Clownfish and anemones (Nemo) appear at almost every site the Phi Phi reefs have healthy anemone populations, which means healthy clownfish populations.

Whale sharks are a rare but real possibility in Phi Phi waters, particularly between February and April. They're filter feeders and pose no risk. If you see one, you'll remember it for the rest of your life.

Snorkeling Tips for Phi Phi

Go early in the morning. The calmest sea conditions, the best light, and the most intact water clarity happen in the first half of the day. Our tours are structured to reach the snorkeling sites early for exactly this reason.

Don't touch the coral. Not just because it's a rule because coral is a living organism and physical contact kills it. Even a gentle brush from a fin can cause lasting damage to a reef that took decades to grow.

Breathe slowly and stay horizontal. Snorkeling is more relaxing when you're flat on the surface and breathing calmly. New snorkelers sometimes lift their heads or swim too upright it's tiring and stirs up sediment. Relax your body, trust the buoyancy, and let the reef come to you.

Use the equipment properly. All snorkeling equipment on Andaman Surprise tours is properly maintained and fitted before your departure. If your mask leaks or your fins don't fit, tell our crew we'll fix it before you get in the water.

Don't feed the fish. It's tempting, it seems harmless, but feeding disrupts fish behaviour, concentrates species that shouldn't be concentrated, and erodes the natural feeding patterns that keep the reef healthy.

Equipment — What's Provided

All Andaman Surprise tours include snorkeling equipment: mask, snorkel, and fins. You don't need to bring your own, though guests who prefer their own prescription masks are welcome to do so.

Buoyancy vests are available on request useful for anyone who wants to float comfortably without treading water, and recommended for younger children.

The Best Phi Phi Snorkeling Tour from Phuket

The Phi Phi Island & Khai Island tour covers the most ground for snorkelers: Coral Gardens, Monkey Beach, Pileh Lagoon, and Khai Island four distinct sites in a single day, each with a different character.

The Phi Phi Island & Bamboo Island tour focuses more on the Phi Phi sites plus Bamboo Island's deeper reef, and suits travellers who want a slightly longer snorkel at each site and more relaxed beach time in between.

Both tours depart from Royal Phuket Marina by speed catamaran, include hotel transfers, snorkeling equipment, and a buffet lunch on board.
